How do I actually join?

Easier than it sounds! You've got a few options: swing by the club's table at Back to Business, check their social media, or just email the advisor directly. Don't overthink that last one — they get these emails all the time and are happy to point you in the right direction.

One thing worth knowing: try to reach out early if you can. Some clubs have deadlines for when new members can join, so the sooner you ask, the better your chances of getting in.

What is the difference between a group and a club?

A student organized group is run by students under Policy 514. It has a faculty supervisor rather than a paid advisor, no budget and no fees, and it cannot use the school or district name.

An official club is school-sponsored. It has a paid advisor whose role is set by the teacher contract, and usually charges a participation fee, though not always. Official clubs have no other revenue sources and do not fundraise.

Many clubs start out as a group and become official once enough students take part. Every listing here is labelled so you can tell which is which.

Why should I join something?

You can take part in dozens of activities and clubs to:

  • Connect with peers who share your interests.
  • Develop skills and have new experiences.
  • Take part in local, state, and national competitions.
  • Obtain awards and recognition.
  • Develop substance for college applications.
Do I have to pay to join?

Official clubs usually charge a participation fee, but not always. Student organized groups have no fees at all. Fees change from year to year, so check with the advisor or supervisor listed on the club before you commit.

Advisors, supervisors, fees and meeting times can change from year to year, so treat what you see here as a starting point.

What is an official club?

An official club is school-sponsored. It has a paid advisor whose role is set by the teacher contract, and it usually charges a participation fee, though not always. Official clubs have no other revenue sources and do not fundraise.

Many clubs begin life as a student organized group and become official clubs once enough students take part.

What is a student organized group?

The "Student Organized Group" label describes how an organization is structured and funded. Student interest groups are student-led and operate under Policy 514. They have a faculty sponsor but no paid advisor, no budget, and no fees, and can't use the school or district name. Official clubs are school-sponsored with a paid advisor and often a participation fee. Groups can become clubs with enough sustained participation. Policy 514

What is a curricular program?

Band, choir and orchestra are classes, not clubs. You take part by enrolling in the class, and the co-curricular groups attached to them are drawn almost entirely from students already enrolled. That is why they sit apart from the rest of this site: there is no sign-up sheet to go find.

Students interested in joining band, choir, or orchestra should contact the appropriate teacher for more information. If you are unsure who to contact, you can ask any music teacher or your counselor for the appropriate contact information. For students not enrolled in band, choir, or orchestra, limited opportunities to participate in our co-curricular music groups will be communicated through the student newsletter.
